2020 Boot Camp

Due to Covid-19, the 2020 PREP/IMSD/Carver Moving In Boot Camp was held virtually via Zoom and was quite successful. It featured a variety of speakers over the course of three days. 

Day One

The first day began with the scholars giving presentations about themselves and why they want a PhD. Stephanie Brown, from CALS/APSC HR, also gave a presentation going over policies and procedures about enrolling in classes and getting paid. 

Day Two

The second day had PREP scholars presenting on their lab rotations. The featured guest speaker that day was Kiri DeBose who told scholars how to take advantage of some of the University Library resources during their time at VT. 

Day Three

The final day of Boot Camp was jam-packed with discussions and speakers. It began with a lively discussion on good science/engineering and representation within science. Then, several IMSD/PREP scholars gave presentations on their paths into science and gave advice to the new scholars. Those presenting included: Matt Flores (IMSD), Hagar Kenawy (PREP alum), Julia Julien (PREP alum), and Katrina Colucci-Chang (IMSD). Ms. Jennifer Lawrence, Director, Virginia Tech Writing Center and Mr. Mark Sumner, IT Coordinator, CALS also gave presentations informing scholars of their services. Ms. Veronica Montes with El Centro at VT and Anjolii Diaz, PhD. Associate professor, Ball State University (IMSD alum) also spoke about the Latinx community and resources available at VT. The Boot Camp wrapped up with a presenation from Dr. Charlotte Amenkhienan, Asst Director, VT Cook Counseling Center, Director of Outreach.
